How to Prepare for your Fall Family Portraits
Hi Guys,
I hope all is well! It’s Fall in NYC and I just wanted to share some tip on how you can prepare for your Fall Family Portrait Sessions. The best way to prepare is to book your session in late October or early November before the temperature drops. This way you can take advantage of the changing fall foliage with out freezing!
Select 2-3 color for the entire family to wear. The coordination of the colors ensure that cohesiveness and will provide a great flow within the photo. Making sure that no one person is overpowering in the photo or sticking out like a sore thumb.
Ok, now this next tip is a big one! Please, please, please feed your family before the family session. Hungry people do not smile. Lol. I’m speaking from experience in front of and behind the camera. Also if you have toddlers or small children, it’s best to schedule your photo session 30-60 mins after they have had a nap. I have a toddler and sleepy kids are cranky kids. And if you didn't know the toddler is running the show you work on their time lol.
If you have a toddler or small child, bring along their favorite toy. It helps keep them calm, and the photographer can use it to draw their focus to the camera.
Arrive at your photo session 10-15 minutes early. Arriving early will allow everyone time to warm up to the photographer, especially small children. I don’t know about you, but my child takes a while to warm up to people. When he first meets them, he is timid and reserved but give him 10 minutes and we will tell you his three year life story.
If you are using a blanket, be sure to pick a color or print that is not distracting. Distracting prints and colors draw the focus away from the subjects, aka you and your family. All the focus should remain on you and your lovely family,
Well, that is it for today, guys! I hope these tips help you with planning your family portraits. If you haven't booked your fall family portraits yet, shoot me a quick email at hello@nicolemondestinphotography.com.
